What is reiki? The word 'reiki' (pronounced raykee) means 'universal life force energy' in Japanese. In the late 19th century, Mikao Usui (1865 - 1926) rediscovered a way of harnessing this powerful healing energy. Having taught it to others, reiki made its way to the West in the 1930s via Mrs Hawayo Takata, where its popularity has continued to grow ever since. Reiki is a safe, non-intrusive holistic healing technique used to treat the body, mind, emotions and spirit.
What is a treatment like? Clients remain fully clothed during the treatment. Only footwear needs to be removed. Once the client is comfortable on the treatment table, the therapist will place their hands on or above the client’s body, working from the head down to the feet.
Who is it suitable for? It can be used on people of any age, including the newborn, pregnant mothers, surgical patients and the elderly, regardless of their state of health. Reiki is also used by people in good health, as a form of preventative treatment and for relaxation.
What are the benefits? For details of some of the benefits of reiki, as described by clients, please see the Testimonials. An increasing number of hospitals in the US are offering reiki for patient and family support, including Yale New Haven Hospital, the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute, Sharp Memorial Hospital Inpatient Cancer Support Services and the Children’s Hospital Boston.
“I had experienced very swollen ankles in the last 3 months of my previous two pregnancies. There was no underlying medical problem but it was very uncomfortable and looked horrible! When my ankles started swelling even earlier on my next pregnancy I felt I had to try something. The something ended up as Reiki.
The treatment was very simple. Estelle simply moved her hand along from my toes through to my lower leg, slightly above the skin. She continued this for about 15 mins on each side. I felt very distinct heat and some tingling in my feet.
There was no instant result but the swelling pretty much disappeared over the next 2 days, and more importantly, didn't reappear for about another 2 months. At that stage I had another Reiki treatment, and again, the swelling reduced. My midwife, whom I had also had for my previous pregnancies, was very impressed with the results, as was I”! Mrs Janet Oliver
“I came to see Estelle for reiki as I was stressed and a little depressed. I was in a relationship that wasn't good for me, but I didn't have the strength to finish it. When she started to work on me I got an amazing burning sensation on my forehead, like it was on fire. One side of my body was very cold and the other side was very hot, and at the very end of the treatment my feet felt like they were starting to burn.
The whole experience was amazing. I came away feeling a sense of relief - there was light at the end of the tunnel after all. I felt much more content, calm and had a gut feeling that deep down I would be able to handle things better. I had the strength to finish the relationship I was in, and that was the best thing I had ever done”. Mrs Carol Hadden
