What is reflexology? Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the principle that there are ‘reflex points’ on the feet which correspond to different parts of the body. Pressure is applied to reflex areas on the feet, using thumbs or fingers, with the aim of stimulating the body’s own healing processes and promoting general relaxation. An Egyptian tomb painting depicting reflexology was discovered in 1897, thought to date back to around 2330 BC. However Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist, is considered to be the modern ‘mother of reflexology’ and it was she who created the first chart to map the organs of the body onto the feet, in the mid to late 20th century. What is a treatment like? Clients remain fully clothed during the treatment. Only shoes and socks need to be removed. Once the client is comfortable on the treatment table, the therapist will use their hands, thumbs and fingers to massage the feet, loosen up the ankles and apply pressure to a sequence of reflex points which correspond to different parts of the body. Who is it suitable for? Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive therapy which can be used on any person, old or young, male or female. However there are certain restrictions which mean that your treatment pattern may need to be adapted or altered, for example if you have a cut on one of your feet, that area would not be treated. Reflexology is also used by people in good health, as a form of preventative treatment and for relaxation. What are the benefits? For details of some the benefits of reflexology, as described by clients, please see the Testimonials. With regards to practitioner treatments, the Northern Ireland 2005 Life and Times Survey found that reflexology was the form of complementary therapy most commonly used by those surveyed when it came to choosing an aid to wellness and relaxation. “Having had both reiki and regular reflexology treatments with Estelle, I can honestly say that my wellbeing as a whole has improved. In particular, I am grateful for the significant improvement that reflexology has made to my swollen ankles. In addition to that, I have been sleeping far better. Estelle’s calm and gentle demeanor instantly helps me relax, and I come away feeling rebalanced, relaxed, focused and ready to take on the world again”. Mrs Maeve O'Farrell “I went to Estelle for a reflexology treatment because I had a sore neck - mostly from stress and tension. I found the treatment most interesting as the tender points on my feet related to my neck, and another tender point on the sole of my foot related to my sinuses which do cause me problems. I felt relaxed and tension free after the treatment and this feeling continued for a number of days”. Mrs Lynn Kee Make an Appointment
